What is ulcerative colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease of unknown etiology characterized by inflammation of the colonic mucosa and intermittent relapsing clinical features like;

  • Diarrhea
  • Tenesmus
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss

This condition is a serious challenge for medical professionals to achieve a cure, but administration of Picha Vasti has achieved remarkable results.

PICHA BASTI

It is a type of Ksheera Basti prepared with;

  • Honey
  • Rock salt
  • Nalpamaradi keram
  • Chargeryadi ghritha
  • Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra) paste
  • Milk decoction of bark of Salmali(Salmalia Malabarica)

We here at Kerala Ayurvedic Centre have advised Picha basti in chronic ulcerative colitis patients. It was was given for 15 days alternate days replaced by basti of chargeryadi ghritam along with some internal medications. In the initial stages itself the stoppage of bleeding can be noticed, later the frequency of the defecation get reduced and the stool starts to solidify with less mucous content.  80% of the cases gave positive results which improved our confidence in treating Ulcerative colitis with Piccha Basti.
